Sensitive raw materials

Our commitment to ethical and sustainable design.

Cardboard

Cardboard is a 100% recyclable and biodegradable material composed of 80% recycled pulp and 20% virgin fibre from sustainably managed forests.

It boasts one of the most sustainable supply chains with a recycling process that considerably reduces both the extraction of virgin raw materials and CO2 emissions required to generate new material.

It is resistant, lightweight and highly customisable, making it ideal for temporary and permanent installations.

At materieunite, we use three main formats: honeycomb cardboard panels, cardboard tubes and expandable cardboard.

Other raw materials.

Linoleum® is a 100% natural and recyclable material consisting of linseed oil, wood flour, cork powder and colour pigments calendered on a natural jute fabric.

Produced in Umbria by Tarkett, a world leader in innovative and eco-friendly flooring solutions, its zero-kilometre nature and total recyclability bears witness to our sustainable choice.

In the materieunite design philosophy, we have “elevated” the role of Linoleum®: from a material predominantly used for flooring to a smooth surface combined with honeycomb cardboard, strengthening the structural resistance of its flexible parts and improving its resistance to wear and external agents. Moreover, we are able to draw on a varied and earthy colour range.

Waterproof

Paperstone® is one of the most innovative ecological materials ever. It is the first composite material to be made with 100% recycled and FSC®-certified paper and cardboard, impregnated with a natural resin called PetroFree™ and natural pigments. The PetroFree™ resin, derived from cashew shell industrial waste, is devoid of volatile organic compounds and formaldehydes.

PaperStone® is not only a beautiful and natural material, it is also technologically advanced: it resists up to 180° without surface alterations, is 100% water-repellent, certified for food contact, ecological and non-toxic.

Marble is a metamorphic rock, forever a key element of Italian sculpture and architecture.

In keeping with the materieunite design philosophy, we have decided to use the waste derived from the extraction and processing of this material to include it in our installations as a decorative element and structural reinforcement to support the cardboard.

The random nature of the waste allows us to create one-of-a-kind pieces, giving life to truly unique and unrepeatable structures.

Glass is a very ancient material made of sand, sodium and calcium carbonates and other elements, all natural.

In addition to being particularly durable, it is also 100% recyclable, allowing the reduced use of virgin material and fewer emissions. It does not dissolve into micro-particles that are harmful to the environment and can be used indefinitely without any alteration of its qualities.

A transparent material with a strong visual identity, it is used in our installations to develop waterproof and washable support surfaces.

Green Cast® acrylic sheets are produced from 100% recycled raw materials. It is a highly innovative product obtained by recovering and recycling Polymethyl Methacrylate, a plastic substance that can be recycled back to its original raw material, Methyl Methacrylate, used precisely to manufacture Green Cast®.

Manufactured by the Italian company Madreperla, the Plexiglass sheets can be recycled indefinitely, without ever losing their qualities. Moreover, compared to normal acrylic sheets produced with virgin raw materials, they require less water for production and generate fewer CO2 emissions.

Green Cast® is a durable and noble plastic that is transparent, easy to work with, and available in multiple colours and finishes.

The panels we use are produced from a wide spectrum of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste including fridges, disposable cutlery, electronics and industrial consumables. They can be used to create modern-looking furniture and design pieces for both indoor and outdoor use. The key benefits of this material are its durability and impermeability.

Ethical and sustainable design.

The emergent creative processes within materieunite take shape in the form of sustainable design models, with the aim of maintaining a constant balance between architecture and the environment.

One of the primary goals of materieunite is to optimise the use of materials needed to produce the items, reducing waste as much as possible, if not completely.

To make ethical and sustainable design accessible, a broader part of society must be involved in the transition towards a circular economy, adhering to the idea of “not leaving anyone behind”.
